Well, just as I as thinking this, I got a text from my friend AJ Yager. (He’s a ginger) like many gingers when summer comes they are stocking up on sunblock, aloe Vera and a few large umbrellas to carry in the day light. Which I often mistake for vampires. Well, as many of you Fitlifer’s know I’m all about natural dietary ways to protect you. Why put lotion and ointments on your body when they are laced with 280 chemicals. Instead, you can get certain nutrients in your diet that will assist you in your protection. 

 

If my ginger friend AJ has questions, I’m sure there are a lot of you reading this that would love to know. Further more… if you are reading this you are probably a person that really cares for their family and friends and only want the best for them. You don’t want to end up like the tanning mom.  Isn’t that crazy. 
 

When you are trying to solve a complex problem you can often quite your mind and look to nature for the answer. The answer is rarely if ever found in the contemplation of covering something up (sun block)… the truth is always found from within. 

 

Get Some Antaxanthin

 

Observe the pink flamingo. It spends most if not all of it’s time in some of the most tropical places on the planet. It’s diet consists of blue-green and red algae, diatoms.  The super-antioxidant astaxanthin is found in algae, the organisms that eat it, and the organisms that eat those organisms.  It has been getting some attention as an “internal sunscreen.” Does it stack up? Well, here’s a study on isolated human skin cells, in which astaxanthin definitely protects against UVA damage. Slow motion photography shows that this awesome bird filters water through their bill 20 times in 1 second to get the food. (I thought using my juicer was a efficient)

Lycopene, is a famous caroteniod found in tomatoes, has been shown to protect humans against sun damage. Remember, cooked tomatoes actually gives you more of the goods then raw or juiced tomatoes.

One of my favorite vitamins has shown that supplementing it increases tolerance and protection against the sun. This recent study seems to confirm that vitamin D is awesome. It’s funny how nature works. Getting sun, can actually protect you against it.

Get Your Long-Chain Omega-3s and Ditch the Omega-6s

Become friends with my buddy Mr. Walnut and Ms. Flax seed. They have a crush on each-other but Ms. Flax seed is nervous to bring Mr. Walnut into the family. Father Flax has a “little seedling mentality.” Getting past the hesitancy of the relationship these two are very high in Omega 3’s.

 

It’s Tea Time 

Green tea has a ton of antioxidants. If you observe some of the oldest cultures on earth they love their tea. It’s a smart move. How it works isn’t fully understood but we do know that the polyphenols inhibit the development of skin tumors by controlling inflammation and preventing DNA damage. Tropical green tea extracts applied to the skin.

1. First thing in the AM. Take a cold shower. You’re probably thinking I’m crazy for bringing this up. It not only wakes you up immediately, thus letting you skip the coffee, but it also speeds up your metabolism. You feel like you conquered something first thing in the am… building up a rampage of motivation to get more stuff done.

 

2. Eat low-glycemic foods, like yogurt or an apple, before bedtime. This bedtime snack can combat morning fatigue and headaches from low blood sugar through the night. Adding 1-2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil to the bedtime snack can also help decrease fatigue and increase cel repair. I usually eat 3 brazil nuts before bed to boost my testosterone as well. Plus the saturated fat helps with REM sleep. This is the type of sleep you need for your body to repair effectively.

 

3. I’ve also been experimenting with an ice bath before bed and then a little bit of melatonin to really knock me out. You will feel like you’ve been hit with an elephant tranquilizer. (I learned this little tip from my friend Tim Ferris.) If you are into understanding your dreams like I am you could even add a little Kava with the melatonin. (Crazy Lucid Dreams.)

 

4. Get a metabolic type test or a full metabolic blood panel. See how your body processes different types of food. Many of my clients have a different metabolic type to the way they have been eating their whole lives… this can cause chaos inside your body and lots of inflammation in your cells, causing weight gain and a myriad of other health problems.

5. Juice! If you find yourself always hungry for no reason you could be starving from a nutrient perspective. Eating a diet high in macro foods leaves little room for micro foods… these are the foods your cells need the most to stay healthy and running effectively. If you give your cells what they need your body will begin to heal and eventually you will get in the best shape internally and externally. Health always starts within. 6. Learn to like nuts. Eating almonds in between each meal will keep your body from going into fat storing state and keep your metabolism running all day.

 

7. Heat it up: Eat spicy food. I love a diet high in red chili peppers and jalapeño. Research has shown that they raise your metabolism by 30-40 percent for up to 3 hours after eating them.


If I could offer up one piece of advice it would be: to start slowly. Start one of these things and do it for 2 weeks. IF you like the results move onto the next one, this will help you with the formation of a new habit and yield optimal results.

 Toxic substances are everywhere, it’s in the air we breathe, certain foods we eat (non-organic, GMO) and even the water we drink. More and more chemicals that did not exist before are being dumped

into our ecosystem, endangering the human and animal population. Chemicals such as pesticides, non-organic fertilizers, air pollutants, herbicides, lead, food additives, lead, mercury, synthetic fertilizers, and solvents are only some of the chemicals that seep into our bodies.  

Heavy Metals: Lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and aluminum. These metals can accumulate in the brain, kidneys, and immune system disrupting normal function. In studying the brains of Alzheimer’s patients who had died, researchers found one common denominator: all had high concentrations of aluminum.

  • Many people have asked me whether they can drink herbal teas during a juice fast…Herbal teas are great during a juice fast as long as it is unsweetened. 
  • Prepare for a juice fast on the day before solid food is stopped by making the last meal one of only fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Pure water should be consumed during the juice fast. Approximately four 8 ounce glasses should be consumed everyday.
  • No coffee, soft drinks, cigarettes, or anything else should be consumed.
  • Body temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate usually slows during a juice fast so if you are cold use a blanket to stay warm.
  • After a juice fast, slowly incorporate food back into your diet.
  • The kidneys are mostly responsible for the elimination of toxic waste. The kidneys can be supported by drinking adequate amounts of fresh vegetable juice. 
  • During a juice fast it is recommended that you juice organic produce. 
  • If you are on certain medications make sure you check with your doctor before starting a juice fast.

Transformation Tips:

1) Tim did the Alpha Reset and lost 8 pounds of gut bloat in the first week. After the reset he flushed out a lot of the toxins (Xenoestrogens) that were in his body, causing inflammation and fat storage in his cells to dissipate. He turned his body from a fat storing machine into a “fat burning” machine.

2) After the DNA test we were able to figure out that Tim is a carb reducer. Meaning when he eats simple carbs his body doesn’t oxidise the food like protein. We slowly eliminated these types of carbs and started supplementing his diet with more vegetables.  

3) We tested a multitude of different workouts and strategies for optimum results and came to the conclusion that the best types of workouts for Tim was mid level cardio in the AM and strength training in the afternoon.

About 5 years ago I started to eliminate dairy out of my diet.

I didn’t know, like many Americans that I was allergic to conventional pasteurized milk.

It wasn’t even really that noticeable most of the year but twice a year I would get a nasty sinus infection. I mean Nasty… my docs at the time said I just had bad allergies. I felt like I had a doctor for every allergin in the world and they all wanted to give me something different. When I would leave… I had a bag of 362 different scrips… it was like tricker treatin’ at the when I would leave the office. 

I had a friend that was into Raw Food at the time introduce me to the raw amazing power of my favorite nut… the almond.

Who doesn’t love Almonds?  Honey glazed almonds, roasted almonds, chilli pepper almonds, candied almonds and my personal favorite an almond covered up in a delicious date… I thought I was the poster boy for healthy eating…I was about 25 pounds over weight and had a gut from college. 

These were the wrong ways to prepare the awesome almond. 

I was eating almonds for taste and not the multitudes of benefits.

GREEN JUICE I LOVE YOU SO, GREEN JUICE YOU ARE MY AMIGO…  

My personal favorite. It’s just so good for you…loaded with chlorophyl, magnesium and zinc and a whole host of other phytonutrients. 

You’ve probably seen a lot of people turning towards green juice drinks recently. I started my green juice/drink career about 5 years ago. I had an older gentlemen present a little gift to me. (It looked like a glass of swamp water.) I’ve always had a fear of swamps, so this was a little bit awkward for me. That day, I decided to drink my fear and slam this giant glass of gobblie goop. (Green Juice)  

Let’s just say I’m glad I did. I felt like the AMAZING after chuggin’ this thing. My body was so nutrient deprived, it soaked up every last drop of the green juice madness and I became the HULK. I know, it’s a cartoon pic… the real pic is too graphic for your young virgin eyes.

The term green juice, is meant to describe any juice – that is in fact some shade of the color green. Green juice may be a combination of fruit and veggies or it may be 100% veggies. Green Juice ingredients may be 100% crisp green, or a rainbow of colors. I’m a personal fan of using all greens.

If someone gives me a different opinion from my own, I consider their side and try to understand where they are coming from. This is having an open mind – not just agreeing with the person regardless what I think and feel.
 

The key to an open mind is consider everything, make changes if you decide a new lesson can be implemented in your life, and love and accept others no matter what their opinions are. You can disagree with them or feel something they are doing is harmful to themselves or others – but that doesn’t mean you are close minded. This would bring me to define close-minded - Anyone who is over confident of their opinion and not willing to consider others’ opinions in a diplomatic way, and most importantly – someone who is not willing to change or adapt.

 

 

 

I wanted to express this because I think a lot of young people feel if they stand up for something they believe in or hold on to their own personal values and beliefs, they are being closed minded. This is not true – an open mind is one willing to listen, contemplate other points of view, and accept and try to understand others opinions. It does not mean you have to go to a rock concert and get stoned to open your mind – that is just a recreational choice and the only thing that would open your mind in that circumstance is considering you may or may not enjoy it!

Mindset Monday – Burn The Ships…

Where are you in your life and what ships do you need and what to burn? Here are five things I want to

share with you. I also want you know what my ships were and how I was able to “burn” them. 

 

I want to get a little personal with you, on this mindset Monday if that’s okay.

 

So a little over a year and half ago… I was living in Tampa fl, and everything seemed to be going right, I was making a great living, I had freedom of time and my relationships where awesome.

 

There was only one thing missing…

 

I didn’t feel like I was growing as a person. This is one of the most important things we can do in this life experience. We are constantly growing and if we are not, we are dying.

 

So there I was…

 

I felt stuck, stagnate, and I felt like I was just simply settling.

 

Being 29 at the time, I knew I had to do something quick, and an old story came to my mind.

 

It was the story of Hernando Cortes…

 

Captain Cortes and a small army left Cuba and set out to conquer Central America. Cortes was going to accomplish his goals, no matter the consequences. The myth states that once Cortes’ troops landed in what is now Mexico, he ordered the ships destroyed by fire.

 

In burning his ships, Cortes took away all options to retreat and, I am sure, got the full buy-in from his troops to make it a successful campaign. They had no choice. Either drown in the sea or conquer this new world.

 

Psychologically what do you think this did to the army? They knew that they could not retreat… do you think they raised their performance up a little…

 

Probably, right? Well they ended up losing anyway…

it’s still a good story…

 

‘You are gullible” they won stupid.

 

So how did I burn my boats in FL and manage to expand as a person in Florida? I had to leave it all behind.

 

Five Keys to Burning the Boats

 

1) Create a “have to” goal. One that will glow white hot within you. Then, burn all the other boats. A terrific relationship with your spouse, a great business, a new venture that changes lives, etc. Having a dynamic visual goal is vital and getting it down on paper is critical.

 

2) Action is key so act as if success is certain. By burning your boats, you will tap into your faith and create a laser-like clarity that brings everything into distinct focus. Your next steps will just flow since they will be so obvious.

 

3) Enlist the help of others. Nothing truly significant in life happens without others help. God created us to do things together. An individual with a burnt boat is nothing more than a castaway so tap into others wisdom and energy and be open to the great unseen forces of God as well.

 

4) Trust your “higher mind” to formulate connections that you never saw before. By burning your boats, you are simply freeing yourself to do something that you have been most likely been preventing yourself from doing all along.

 

5) Unconventional success calls for unconventional approaches. We all have hard-wired habits and ways of doing things in our life that, in time, can actually become roadblocks to success. Try completely new, unfamiliar approaches and see what happens. Charts and maps are terrific but, quite often, incredible journeys start by someone acting on one seemingly crazy and paradoxical hunch.
