Mindset Monday – Keeping An Open Mind

We all have the journey of discovering who we are, what we want, and what we wish our legacy to be. That is our life cycle. Keeping an open mind means to not get set in your thoughts and refuse to change your mind. If someone gives me a different opinion from my own, I consider their side and try to understand where they are coming from. This is having an open mind – not just agreeing with the person regardless what I think and feel.
 

The key to an open mind is consider everything, make changes if you decide a new lesson can be implemented in your life, and love and accept others no matter what their opinions are. You can disagree with them or feel something they are doing is harmful to themselves or others – but that doesn’t mean you are close minded. This would bring me to define close-minded - Anyone who is over confident of their opinion and not willing to consider others’ opinions in a diplomatic way, and most importantly – someone who is not willing to change or adapt.

 

 

 

I wanted to express this because I think a lot of young people feel if they stand up for something they believe in or hold on to their own personal values and beliefs, they are being closed minded. This is not true – an open mind is one willing to listen, contemplate other points of view, and accept and try to understand others opinions. It does not mean you have to go to a rock concert and get stoned to open your mind – that is just a recreational choice and the only thing that would open your mind in that circumstance is considering you may or may not enjoy it!

Why Diet Soda Will Turn You Tubby….

I was thinking about some of the old habits I used to have years ago when I was fatter, lazier and unhealthier (the average American really), and I remember one of those habits was downing several cans of soda pop each day. The stuff was like crack in a can. Mt. Dew, Root Beer, Cream Soda, Dr. Pepper and my personal favorite “Cherry Coke.” WOW!

Nothing like downing a Cherry Coke after a long night of partying and stuffing my face with Pizza.

Why not… right? I was young…. it was never going to catch up to me. After a couple years of this, I started to notice a little muffin top popping out..I would work out every day… but you can’t out train a crappy diet.

So, you know what I did?   I quickly switched to another dietary devil, diet pop and RED BALLS (I’m from Michigan, I say POP deal with it.) ;)

 

And man was I hooked…It was better then anything I had ever tasted. Heaven in a can if you must. It literally gave me wings… In fact it reminds me of this video.

Now, of course this video is an extreme example of behavior modification induced by a diet pop or Red Balls.

But, you get it.

Stuff is addictive like crack. All of my favorite sodas were available in diet varieties and I thought since I cut out all of the sugar and extra calories in regular soda, by drinking diet pop, I could have a couple diet pops each day and be much better off.

Well, I did start to lose fat after making the switch, due to the drop in calories and sugar each day.  But I really became addicted to the artificial sweeteners in this stuff. After a few months, I was having a diet pop with every meal and snack. When I went out to eat, I’d drink all the refills I probably downed about 120-350 ounces each day, and guess what?

 

I started gaining fat again. 

 

I then began investigating the artificial sweeteners and some of the longer term studies that had been done.  Well, some of the results I read about regarding what happens to these things after they enter your body literally scared me to drop diet soda drinking immediately. Without question I was done and done.

 

On top of that a recent 8 year study showed that those who drink even 2 cans each day of this stuff are 57% more likely to become overweight.

 

Why the weight gain from something with 0 calories?

 

The exact reasons aren’t conclusive at this point, though one of the primary concerns is the false sense of security that the habit of diet soda drinking can give.  In other words, you’ll tend to get extra loose with your diet because you feel you’re making up for it with the diet pop.

 

Another problem is that when anything other than water hits your stomach, you get an up tick in the hunger response…so if you grab a diet soda instead of water, there’s a good chance you’re going to want to eat something with it.

Plus, it has little if any nutritional value at all. Your body will only run as good as the nutrients you put in it.

 

Bottom line, diet pop is another one of these ‘diet products’ that are loaded with bad chemicals your body doesn’t want or need.  In most cases, these just foster a yo yo method of dieting…trying to lose fat through short term solutions that usually just magnify the problem.

 

The secret to attaining life time health and fitness starts with the right mind set…when you’re in the right frame of mind, ridding your life of nasty habits like diet soda becomes a natural consequence of the way you choose to eat…and live.

 

Having a right mindset starts with the food you put into your body. It’s amazing to me, how much more at peace I’ve become after cutting out stimulants completely. (I’m not saying you need to go there with me.) I just think as a society we need to be more aware of what we are consuming and how it effects our internal world. I believe our internal world creates the external and the more “in tune” we become inside the more magic starts to happen on the outside.

Whatever it is you are working on, it will still be there when you get back… trust me.

 

In fact, the more you raise your vibration… MORE opportunity will be there waiting for you. I mean, when I was out looking at views from up here… How good do you think I felt?

Pinocchio was a 1940′s fictional character that taught us how “not to” lie when we are kids.

 

Remember the movie… little wooden doll, given to an evil dude? Treated P, like a slave. Poor P.

 

It got me thinkin’

 

How come so many people lie day in and day out, when they are adults…

Your Pinocchio Past…

 

This is where you told lies about yourself that happened in the past…

 

And for a good many of us we still hold onto our Pinocchio Past.

 

Cory Boatright, our newest transformation client was holding onto his Pinnochio past.

 

-       Going to bed at 2am, waking up at 11. (For really no reason.)

-       Not eating breakfast, bypassing lunch and only eating once a day.

-       Eating foods that tasted great, but had no nutritional merit.

-       Snacking on chips, popcorn, soda and other snack foods that feed our cravings even more.

-       Putting work and money before health.

 

Aside from these lies…he also had many truths that have really helped him with success and serving others.

 

-       He believes that the more he gives back the more he will be rewarded. (He gives away 10% or more of everything he makes.)

-       Investing in himself is bar none the best investment, especially something like health or our coaching.

-       Laser sharp focus. Not doing 85 things at once but focusing on 1 thing at a time and becoming a master of that 1 thing before moving on.

-       Saying something like “I believe in you.” To the people you care about “could be” one of the most powerful phrases we could ever speak.

 

When is the last time you told someone you cared about and believed in…

What happened in vegas?

“What Legacy are you creating?”

 

This was the last question I mentioned to Cory Boatright before being picked up via town car and taken to the Las Vegas Airport.

 

It was the conclusion of a long weekend of networking with some of the most brilliant entrepreneurs and marketers on the planet. 

 

Ok, it wasn’t all talk… there was an occasional cocktail and “stupid face.” (More on this later.)

 

Let’s get back to Cory…

 

Cory and I have talked a lot. On many occasions about his life purpose and what he is consciously creating in this life.

 

Do you have people like this in your own life?

 

I’m truly blessed to be surrounded by people like Cory.

 

He’s helped me, more then once with ideas about business strategy and systems and even relationships.

 

Don’t tell him I told you this but he’s kind of a metaphysical tech nerd.

 

Aside, from doing nerdy things like developing a million dollar a year real estate business he was once in a Taco Bell commercial. (Kind of cool, right?)

 

We spoke a couple of weeks ago and he was telling me how rapidly his life was expanding and the amazing things that were unfolding.  

 

Then it happened….

 

I asked him the same question I ask all of my uber-succesful Legacy Club peeps.

 

Are you taking care of yourself?

 

You are helping thousands of people all over the world, but are you taking care of yourself?

 

The prior year, Cory spent traveling around the world with the love of his life…Ivy.

 

They fed baby tigers, rode elephants and Indulged in some of the most decadent and delicious foods all over planet earth.

 

Let’s just say he put on some baby weight and he’s not pregnant. (You know what I’m talking about.)

 

At the end of the conversation we discovered he was probably eating healthier then 90% of the population but 90% is NOT GOOD ENOUGH for a guy that is playing a really LARGE GAME in this life.

 

Long story short, we decided to invite him into the club. He’s here for a HUGE purpose in this life and I personally want to help him add a couple decades onto his life span.

 

So with that…

 

I’m now sitting on a plane writing you this…

 

Destination – OKLAHOMA

 

Have I been to OK… never.

 

I’m looking forward to it though. I’m currently traveling 4 times in the next 30 days… at first I was like.

 

“I REALLY need to figure out a way to automate what I do. Traveling is a pain in the ass.”

 

(I quickly reframed this to.)

 

I Love to travel and I’m always in my right place. When it comes time to automate the right people will show themselves to me.

 

Also, with all of this new technology and the explosion of social media, far to many of us get stuck behind our keyboards when we can and always will make a bigger impact in person.

 

You never know who you can inspire or create a space of change when sitting in the terminal or on the plane.

 

I’ve had multiple people email me years later to tell me that the conversation we’ve had changed who they were and where they were headed….

 

AND “THAT” my friend is what this life is all about.

So What’s Your Lame Excuse?  Come On, Let Me Hear It!

You’ve seen the studies, the documentaries, and the research. You know it’s good for you. You know the Surgeon General recommends 30 minutes a day. You know you don’t feel well and you sure as hell know those pants aren’t getting any looser. So why are most of us still not exercising regularly? Not five days a week, not four, not three, not two, maybe one but probably none. In fact, 30 percent of us get zero physical activity … AT ALL!

And of course you know that little to no exercise combined with an enriched, processed, fast food/crap food-laced with sugar, salt and fat diet has caused two-thirds of the adult American population to become either overweight or obese.  

Should I even mention that one-third of our children are following in the same footsteps?     

We know better. So, seriously, how is this even possible? 

Sure, we can sit here and play the blame game. Point fingers at our government for budget cuts in schools causing them to discontinue recess and PE classes. But the average American child spends seven hours attached to a television, a video game or computer.  So is it solely the school’s fault for the kids lack of movement? 

We can get upset at Ronald McDonald and that frumpy purple thing for capitalizing off the seemingly inexpensive Super Size menu and making the connection between plastic toys and bad food.  However, nobody is forcing us to hang a left into the drive through, so why get mad at them?  

Does Peggy from accounting really deserve the eye roll? After all, she was just being nice bringing those Christmas cookies into the office, and I highly doubt she was waving a machete, forcing you to eat all 16 of them.   

I’ll admit, there are things out there that don’t make it easy: long days, office snacks, hungry kids and quick drive-thrus. The truth is, everyone works, everyone has temptation, everyone has long days and everyone is busy. So what the heck are those healthy people who exercise and eat right doing? If we are all in the same boat, how are they so different?

It’s not that they have more time, more money or fewer responsibilities. It’s quite simple actually: They choose to not make excuses!  

Part of my day consists of following up with clients and friends. All the time, I’m asking them:

Where have you been? Haven’t seen you in class?  Did you get a workout in today?  Did you eat your healthy meals and snacks? 

Sometimes it’s legitimate, but most times I hear:

I’ve been sooooooooo busy.”

“I didn’t have time to eat or pack my lunch”

“Oh, my boss made me stay late.”

“I was tired, so I just didn’t get up.”

Bullsh*t  Bullsh*t Bullsh*t!

I know that things happen that are out of your control. I understand that your kids get sick or you had a fender bender on the road. Those are reasons, not excuses. The ones who feed me the constant bull are the same ones who hate their bodies, have high blood pressure, have low self-esteem, and are uncomfortable in their own skin. It’s the 70 percent on the fast track to their preventable death beds (112,000 per year actually) who use every excuse to get out of exercise or good habits.

So today, I’m going to squash the top six excuses that I hear from people trying to wiggle out of being healthy. 

Excuse No. 1—”I DON’T HAVE TIME.”

SOLUTION: Really? The average person watches five hours of TV per day and yet seven out of 10 people are overweight. I’m no math whiz but if you carry the one and divide by two … LOOKS LIKE THERE’S TIME TO ME!!!

Exercise doesn’t have to be this sweaty, dreaded task.  If you could squeeze in just 30 minutes of walking or even split that 30 minutes into three, 10-minute sessions, you can make a fantastic impact on your health.

Excuse No. 2— “I’M TOO HUNGRY AND TIRED AFTER WORK.”

SOLUTION: You shouldn’t be hungry because you should have packed  healthy snacks and taken them with you, right? Otherwise, spend the buck and buy a protein bar. If you just got off work, yeah, you’re probably going to be a little tired. However, chances are you were sitting ALL day and the tiredness is a mental thing, not physical. So by forcing yourself to do the workout, you’ll feel amazing and prevent yourself from turning into a stressed out, angry slug when you get home. 

Excuse No. 3—”IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE TO EAT HEALTHY.  FAST FOOD IS CHEAP AND QUICK.”

SOLUTION: OMG! Don’t make me get all gangster on your ass. I know it may seem like a deal to grab the two for five Western heart attacks or the $0.99 McGarbage, but it’s so processed and full of sugar, salt and fat, you’ll be hungry shortly after and seeking out your next meal.   Where’s the deal in that?  

Eating healthy can be very inexpensive. A package of whole wheat pasta costs less than two bucks. Add a jar of red pasta sauce for another 2 bucks and a package of green salad for $1.50, you’ve got a super healthy meal that will fill up your entire family for less than $6. Not to mention that just 20 minutes of prep work in the kitchen preparing healthy snacks and meals could prevent the tempting drive thru after work.

Excuse No. 4 – “I NEED TO GET INTO BETTER SHAPE BEFORE I REALLY START TO WORKOUT.”

SOLUTION: That’s like saying you need to clean before the maid comes. Join a beginner fitness class or boot-camp and work at your own pace. If you’re serious about getting in shape, this is the best way to hold yourself accountable and get motivated. Don’t be scared, just do it!

Excuse No. 5—”I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO.”

SOLUTION: I totally understand. It can be a little intimidating if you are new to the workout scene. Huge machines and sweaty muscle heads around every corner, yikes. I recommend keeping it simple but following four rules:

1. Keep your heart rate up (ask your doctor if you have any health problems)

2. Do a combination of resistance training and cardio training.

3. Do not be afraid to ask the gym staff questions. That’s what they are there for and they don’t mind at all. 

4. Work hard!

Excuse No. 6—”I HAVE KIDS AND DON’T WANT TO BE SELFISH WITH MY TIME.”

SOLUTION: Remember the stats in the beginning? One in three kids are overweight. Yours may or may not be, but turn health and fitness into a family affair regardless. Go play basketball with your kids at the park, ride bikes to school together, go for walks or jogs on the beach, climb stairs at the track. Use it as a way to be together. You may not think exercise is all that fun, but your kids think it’s pretty cool to have fit parents who can keep up with them. Trust me, it’s more selfish if you aren’t exercising and staying healthy.

Remember, things will always get in the way, but this is life—YOUR LIFE—we’re talking about. Lose the excuses and find a way.

Worst Drinks On The Planet To Consume…

BEWARE: 11 Things You Should Avoid When Gulping Down Your Next Drink Of Choice….

If you are looking to pack on a lot of belly fat, these products will help you do it. Stay away from these products for a flat belly.

#1: Vitamin Water:

It says it only has 13 grams (g) of sugar. However, there are 2.5 servings per container. So there are 32 g of sugar in one 20 oz. bottle of Vitamin Water.

#2: Welch’s 100% Grape Juice

It says there is no added sugar but when you look on the label—just 8 oz., only about half of what somebody will drink in a glass of juice—has a whopping 39 g of sugar. Even worse, it is fructose, which is a kind of sugar that is easily converted to belly fat.

#3: Coca Cola

The second ingredient is high fructose corn syrup and just 8 oz. has 27 g. of sugar. Now I don’t mean to pick on Coke, most other soft drink brands are just as bad. Don’t forget that most soft drinks also contain a hefty amount of caffeine so you keep drinking more and more.

#4: Amp Energy Elevate

It contains 29 g of sugar per 8 oz and there are two servings, 16 oz, in the can shown in this picture. That means that you are getting nearly 60 g. of sugar in just one ca

#5: Sobe Cranberry Grapefruit

This flavored beverage has 26 g of sugar per 8 oz., and the bottle shown here is 2.5 servings, meaning that you are getting over 60 g of sugar if you were to sit down and drink this product. Keep in mind that 4 g of sugar equals one teaspoon. Would you dump 15 teaspoons of sugar into a glass of water and drink it?

#6: Rockstar Energy Drink

If you drink this, you are certainly not going to look like a chiseled rock star, you are going to look like an overweight couch potato. Each can of Rockstar Energy Drink contains 62 g of sugar.

#7: Gatorade

I was shocked to find out that it contains high fructose corn syrup as its second ingredient and to think that they market this product towards athletes. What athletes really need is an abundance of fresh water and healthy high nutrient foods to replenish their bodies.

#8: Tropicana’s cranberry juice

What’s more, this beverage contains high fructose corn syrup and 32 g of sugar per 8 fluid ounces.

#9: Starbucks Doubleshot Energy plus Coffee

It has two servings per container with each serving containing 14 g of sugar. This means that a can of this “coffee” drink contains 28 g of sugar.

#10: Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix

It is loaded with high fructose corn syrup. Keep in mind, the average “small” margarita weighs in at a huge 400 calories!

#11: Mr. and Mrs. T Sweet and Sour Mix

It has high fructose corn syrup as the second ingredient. Yet another reason why mixed drinks are hazardous to your waistline.

Quit It, Then Hit It: Your Gym Guide

Ok, Fitlifers…before I let you read this post I’m going to introduce our new Fit Life friend Jaime Jereb, we met in the coffee shop and I saw her wearing barefoot shoes. I knew in that moment that we had to have a push up contest, right there in the middle of the coffee shop. Little did she know I just pounded 4 shots of wheat grass. The bad news is…. she still beat me. WTF.

Before we get down to the list, I have to tell you something. I have adult attention deficit disorder. Well, I’m not exactly sure. I’m concluding from the 12 online tests that, by the end, tell me it would be beneficial to seek the care of a mental health care specialist.
I’m also a Virgo. So I guess that makes me a highly critical, yet organized multitasker? 
 

Regardless, my brain is always going and my eyes are always scanning. In fact, I spend a good portion of my day just watching other people.  

Wait, that sounds creepy. What I mean is, I pay attention to what they are doing…. how they are doing it…. then analyze why their left ear is lower than the right. Eventually I get back on track and question the routines of others, like the overweight older gentleman packing an extra tire around his midsection. Is his body really in need of shoulder shrugs at this point? Hey lady who spends every day doing an hour of low-intensity cardio, after two years, are you really seeing the fat-loss results you’re striving for?
I often wonder if these people are doing more harm than good.
Below is a list of 10 things I think you should stop doing immediately, unless you want adverse effects.

No. 1: Crunches 

  • Quit it! Most of us spend our days with poor posture, which is amplified when being hunched over a computer or a steering wheel for eight hours. Crunches reinforce that poor posture while curving the back and yanking the neck (because most people don’t do them correctly anyway).   
  • Hit it! Do a variety of planks. This will not only work your entire core, but the rest of your body as well.  

No. 2: Long, slow cardio for fat loss 

  • Quit it! Being able to do an hour of running or hour of elliptical is great. But if that’s all you’re doing, you’re never going to accomplish true fat loss, which—I hate to break it to you—comes from hard work, not reading Vogue on the treadmill. 
  • Hit it! Incorporate interval training. This is much quicker and more effective for fat loss. Catch up on Vanity Fair another time.

No. 3:  Machines that make you sit

  • Quit it! Like I said in a previous article, most of us sit around 15 hours a day. The last thing you need to do is sit while you work out.  
  • Hit it! Take those same exercises and stand using dumbbells, resistance bands, the cable machines or even your own body weight. Standing not only alleviates stress and compression on the spine, you will burn more calories by simply using more muscle.    

No. 4: Using heavy weight  

  • Quit it! Put down the jumbo weights unless you can use them without compromising good form. I used to challenge meatheads who were curling ridiculous-sized dumbbells to use half the weight but to keep their back straight and to not swing. Most couldn’t do it. The long and the short of it: They simply were not strong enough.  
  • Hit it! Check your ego at the door and use appropriate sized-weights. In my opinion (and most other woman), general fitness and lean muscle is far sexier that 42-inch, steroid-injected biceps. Just throwing it out there fellas.

No. 5: Training like a body builder

  • Quit it! That type of training involves long periods of rest and recovery between sets. Not to mention the workouts take forever.   
  • Hit it! If you are looking for fat loss while still trying to gain strength and endurance, opt for more circuit training, or at the very least, super setting.  

No. 6: Doing the same routine day in and day out

  • Quit it! Do you want to stay exactly the same? Your body needs to be challenged in order to change physically and metabolically. Keep doing what you’re doing; keep getting what you’re getting.
  • Hit it! Get crazy! Take different classes offered at your gym or change up your workouts every couple of weeks. 

No. 7: Not making time to rest

  • Quit it! If you don’t give your body the proper rest, it will pull the plug on your entire fitness operation. Rest is imperative if you want to change your physique. It’s the only time when your muscles grow and develop, not when you’re actually working out.
  • Hit it! Get plenty of sleep at night and schedule rest days away from your workouts.

No. 8: Not eating before a morning workout

  • Quit it! Eating something before a workout does not prevent you from burning fat. All it does it reeve up your metabolism and give you 10 times the physical and mental energy to get you through. Without it, you may crap out half way through a set.
  • Hit it! All you need is a small snack or meal of combined lean protein, whole grain carbs and healthy fat. My all-time favorite: toast with natural peanut butter.

No.9: Static stretching before a workout 

  • Quit it! There’s been no evidence that suggests stretching before a workout actually prevents sore muscles or prevents injury. In fact, recent studies are finding that static stretching beforehand could actually inhibit your performance. 
  • Hit it! A dynamic warm-up of simple movements that prepare you for whatever it is you’re doing that day. Make sure you always stretch after a workout to prevent knots and tightness.

No. 10: Staying inside your comfort zone 

  • Quit it! A real workout is work! Don’t forget that. If you want results, if you want a flat stomach, if you want to fit back into your perfectly tailored suits, then step outside your comfort zone and do some flippin’ work! To put it bluntly: Get off your bum, move more, eat less, sweat a lot and complain very little.
