Food Fight!

Food Fight!

Food Fight! In a battle of nutritional superstars, which options offer a healthier edge?

As a health-savvy consumer, you try to toss nutrient-packed foods into your grocery cart. But when you’re deciding between similar-seeming nutritious items (say, turkey or chicken?), you may not know the superior choice. “Food is your fuel,” says Mitzi Dulan, R.D., co-author of The All-Pro Diet. ”Selecting the most nutritious options will improve your diet and give you a competitive edge.” While you can’t go wrong eating both quinoa and brown rice, choosing the nutritional champ may give your running the boost it needs. In a healthy-food smackdown, here are our winning picks.

STRAWBERRIES vs. BLUEBERRIES

The winner: Blueberries
Both are health all-stars, but a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reported that blueberries (particularly wild ones) showed the most antioxidant activity of all the fruits tested. “These antioxidants help keep your immune system strong,” says Dulan, “and reduce muscle-tissue damage from exercise.”

CHICKEN BREAST vs. TURKEY BREAST
The winner: Turkey Breast
Both breast meats are free of saturated fat, but turkey has three additional grams of protein per three-ounce serving, plus more iron (which helps deliver oxygen to muscles) and selenium. “This mineral functions as part of an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase,” says sports dietitian Suzanne Girard Eberle, R.D., author of Endurance Sports Nutrition. This enzyme works as an antioxidant to protect cells from free radicals that may contribute to cancer and heart disease.

HEALTHY CHOICE: Make your own lunch meat to avoid the excess sodium in much deli turkey. Bake turkey breasts, slice them thinly, and add to sandwiches.

PEANUT BUTTER vs. ALMOND BUTTER
The winner:
 Almond butter
Almond butter has more calcium and magnesium, a mineral that’s often lacking in runners’ diets and is important for muscle contraction. While the two nut butters contain about the same amount of fat, the almond variety has 60 percent more monounsaturated fat. “When consumed in place of saturated fat,” says Dulan, “monounsaturated fat lowers harmful LDL levels to help decrease heart disease and stroke risk.” Almond butter also has three times more vitamin E, an antioxidant that may reduce cancer risk.

HEALTHY CHOICE: Blend almond butter into a postrun smoothie, or stir it into oatmeal.

SPINACH vs. KALE

The winner: Kale
Kale’s nutritional might would win over even Popeye. Gram for gram, kale contains four times more vitamin C, and one and a half times the amount of immune boosting vitamin A and vitamin K. “Vitamin K ensures that blood clots properly,” says Eberle, “but it’s also needed to make a bone protein essential for strong, healthy bones.” Kale contains three times more lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants deposited in the retina that work together to protect eye health.

HEALTHY CHOICE:
Make kale “chips”: Spread bite-sized pieces on a baking sheet. Spray with olive oil, season with salt, and bake for 15 minutes (until crisp).

COW’S MILK vs. GOAT’S MILK

The winner: Goat’s milk
When Spanish researchers compared cow’s and goat’s milk from animals raised under similar conditions, they found that both have the same amount of essential amino acids needed to repair and build muscle. But goat’s milk contains a larger percentage of omega-3 fats, as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and conjugated linoleic acid (or CLA). Studies suggest CLA has a number of effects, including lowering cancer risk, improving bone health, and helping reduce body fat.

HEALTHY CHOICE: Use tangy, slightly sweet goat’s milk (found at health-food stores) the same way as cow’s milk-on cereal, in smoothies, and when baking.

WHEAT BREAD vs. RYE BREAD
The winner:
 Rye bread
According to a study in the Nutrition Journal, researchers in Sweden found that participants who ate rye bread for breakfast experienced less hunger later in the day compared with those who ate wheat bread. Hanna Isaksson, the lead study author, believes that rye’s ability to quell hunger is due to its high fiber count. Rye can have up to eight grams of fiber per slice-even more than whole wheat.

HEALTHY CHOICE:
Rye bread often contains some refined wheat flour, so to get the most fiber, buy “100 percent rye” loaves or make sure whole rye flour or meal is the first ingredient.

QUICK HITS
Here are some some more superfood winners.

Quinoa beats brown rice. Quinoa has three extra grams of protein per cooked cup, plus more fiber, iron, and magnesium.

Greek yogurt beats regular yogurt.
The Greek variety has about twice as much protein as traditional types.

Green tea beats coffee. It’s bursting with antioxidants (such as EGCG) that help ward off diabetes and certain cancers.

Pork tenderloin beats beef tenderloin. The pork version has less saturated fat, more B vitamins, and is cheaper.

Goat cheese beats feta cheese. Goat cheese has nearly half the cholesterol and a third less sodium.

Orange beats apple. They have similar amounts of calories and fiber, but oranges have 12 times as much vitamin C.

Red pepper beats green pepper.
It boasts eight times the vitamin A, which keeps your immune system strong.

Flaxseed beats flaxseed oil.
The seeds have lots of magnesium, potassium, selenium, and fiber.

Why Flabby Abs Grow From The Inside-Out

Why Flabby Abs Grow From The Inside-Out

Building rock-hard abs is like building a house. You need a solid foundation.

flabby absThat “foundation” is your large intestine. Your colon.

If it’s inflamed because of, well, poop build-up, all kinds of bad things can happen.  Viscera somatic inhibition, for one. That’s science-speak for a muscle that shuts down when it’s on the same neurologic loop as an organ that’s inflamed.

You’ve heard of left-arm numbness when someone is having a heart attack? Same deal.

So, what can cause your colon to become inflamed? Naturally, it all starts with your diet. Add it to your list of reasons to start juicing.

Dehydration. Eating processed foods that are loaded with chemicals. Eating grains that are high in gluten. Drinking too much alcohol.Abs

Any of those triggers can lead to constipation and an inflamed colon, which, in turn, can make it nearly impossible to erase flabby abs.

Why does this matter?

No. 1, nobody wants flabby abs.

AbsAnd No. 2, having a strong core is critical to stabilizing your hips and rib cage. Without it, forget about reaching your full strength potential. Not to mention you’ll probably have to deal with a number of other recurring injuries as a result.

The lesson here is simple, but often misunderstood.

Sit-ups and ab crunches are a great way to get a six-pack. But until you correct the less visible issue of colon inflammation, a lot of your work in the gym will be time wasted. You won’t see the results you want.

Take a close look at your diet and make changes. Cut out the nasty processed foods. Stay hydrated.

And try a glass of Zip-Zap-Zing.

Here is the recipe…

Zip Zap Zing Juice

This a powerful juice to drink before a meeting and when you need extra brain power. This will give your brain the zip- zing that it needs to focus on the task at hand and get stuff done.

• 1/2 cucumber

• 1/2 beet

• 2 stalks of celery

• 1/2 lemon

• 1 ginger root

• 1 handful cilantro

• 1 handful of chard

Wash your vegetables. Place the herbs in the juicer halfway through to get the maximum benefit of the nutrients. Peel the lemon and cucumber if they are not organic. Cut the tops off of the cucumber and the beet. Process in the juicer.

Your life’s about to change.

Clean Your Liver And Lose belly fat

Clean Your Liver And Lose belly fat

One of the great things about the body is its ability to tell you when something isn’t right. Take your liver, for example.

Some of the more common signs that your liver has been damaged include fatigue, poor appetite, jaundice or discolored urine. It isn’t likely that the damage was caused by your diet (at least not your meal-eating habits), but rather is the result of drinking alcohol excessively, or taking harmful prescription medications.

But even though your diet didn’t cause the problem, it can go a long way toward fixing it.

By introducing certain vitamins and nutrients to your diet, you can not only remedy damage that’s been done to your liver, but you can also prevent liver damage from happening in the first place. The average Western diet isn’t typically rich in these substances, but by making a point to include them in yours, you can improve the function of your liver and stave off damage from occurring.

Vitamin E

One of the first steps to securing better liver health is to increase your intake of Vitamin E. Foods that pack the greatest Vitamin E punch are green leafy vegetables, eggs, various seeds and nuts, and wholegrain foods. You can also find Vitamin E in vegetable oils, but only when the oil isn’t heated.

One other important note regarding Vitamin E: many people use supplements to boost their Vitamin E intake. Be cautious not to overdo it, because too much Vitamin E can be as damaging as a Vitamin E deficiency.

Cruciferous vegetables

Many vegetables are naturally cleansing to your liver. Unfortunately, they simply aren’t common in many Americans’ diets. Cabbage, bok choy, horseradish, collard greens, turnips,, watercress and wasabi all help the liver cleanse itself.

Vitamin C

Everybody knows that oranges are chock full of Vitamin C, and for that reason they’re great to maintain the health of your liver. Actually, vegetables like broccoli, red peppers and parsley have even higher levels of Vitamin C, so try to find ways to work them into your diet as well.

“Liver Life”

Straight from the pages of “Juice Up Your Life,” Liver Life is a delicious concoction that provides the cleansing nutrients that your liver needs to stay functioning properly. As most juice recipes in “Juice Up Your Life,” it’s a simple but effective recipe that should become a staple in your diet. All you need are three apples, a half of a beet, and a juicer. Wash the apples, remove the stems, place all three in a juicer with the half-beet, and enjoy.

Inspiration Strikes

FitLife.tv Transformation What inspired me: One day I decided ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, I made a choice to stop coming up with excuses as to why I didn’t have the time to take control of my weight and take action. I struggled with depression and realized that I used food to sooth my pain and worries. I quickly gained over 40lb in about 18 months.

I ran into an old classmate and he asked, ” So how far along are you? My wife is pregnant too” WOW!! If that wasn’t a wakeup call, I am not sure what would be. As I thought about it the more I realized that it was not so much about losing the weight as it was about being HEALTHY!!

I went to see a nutritionist who quickly informed me that she was really worried because my body fat % was OVER 40%!! My father died of a heart attack and to hear a Dr. tell me that she is worried that I would end up on the same path scared me. I knew that it was time to get my body AND my mind right.

NEW E-BOOK JUICE UP YOUR LIFE REVEALS DELICIOUS JUICE CONCOCTIONS THAT HIDE INSIDE ALL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

SAN DIEGO, CA (April 19, 2011) – Suffering from headaches? Sample the Red Devil. Want better digestive health? Try a glass of the Orange and Green Mohawk. Having trouble sleeping? See how the juices from spinach, celery, kale and lemon can help. Juices that take aim at improving everything from your sex drive to your cholesterol level, as well as better health in general, are now at available at your fingertips in a new e-Book titled Juice Up Your Life. The book marks the culmination of months of juicing trial-and-error by nutrition specialist, life motivator and author Drew Canole.

It’s no secret, fruits and vegetables are good for you. We’ve all heard that since grade school. But the powers of their juices is considerably less known, and the mystery of getting kids to enjoy the taste of broccoli, cauliflower or beets has eluded mankind for eons. Until now. The secret is out. Juice Up Your Life is loaded with one delicious sample drink after another, each accompanied by observations Canole offers from the research process. The book reveals better than 100 fruit- or vegetable-based juice recipes straight from the juicer of the master concoctor himself. The recipes are part of a book that addresses better-health habits in general, and is one of a series of e-publications offered by the web-based health and nutrition portal FitLife.tv.

"“My sincerest hope is that this book changes your life,” Canole writes in the introduction of Juice Up Your Life. “No matter what your overall health goal is, juicing has the potential to reshape not only your physical landscape but your internal workings as well.”"

— Drew Canole

For anybody already turned on to juicing, the book makes “blender guesswork” a thing of the past. For those new to juicing, the book shows how vegetables can become an easy, delicious part of your everday diet. For people in either camp, the book reveals such discoveries as this: two carrots, one broccoli floret, two handfuls of spinach, a half of a beet, and one lemon combine to deliver a delicious juice packed with energy-boosting punch. Canole calls that one the Energizer Bunny. Some people might call it disgusting, but they’d be surprised. Canole’s done his homework. The secret is out.
